Writing That Grabs a Reader’s Attention

Getting the reader’s attention is crucial in blogging. Why? No matter how good your ideas are, you’ll never get anyone to read them if you haven’t gotten them to look your way first. Anyone who has seen your blog is the prospects and the only way for you to turn them into readers is by getting their attention.

Did I get your attention? Well, that’s good then because now I can teach how to get the attention of someone else.

People can’t pay attention to everything all at once

It’s just the way it is. People can’t read two blogs at once. They can’t say two things at once. They can’t drive two cars at once. No, they have to focus on one thing and focus on another thereafter.

Paying attention is our way of filtering the important and unimportant aspects of life. We forget all about the irrelevant ones, while the important ones have an impact on us. But since our attention span is limited, we can’t be attentive to everything all at once.

The human mind is selective. Humans only pay attention to aesthetic things. The only way to get people’s attention is to appeal to the senses. If is something’s delicious, it’ll get people’s attention. An aroma that has a pleasing smell will surely get attention. Exquisite jewelry will get people’s attention. As a matter of fact, I don’t think I’ve ever heard of anyone who’s attracted to anything displeasing.

In the same way, people are also selective when reading blogs. So, you have the give them a reason to pay attention to it.

So, how can I make my writing pleasing to anyone who reads it?
People read because they want to understand. People read novels because they want to understand the story. They read the newspaper because they want to understand what’s happening around them. They read blogs because they want to understand a new fashion statement or joke. Simply said, you’ll please your readers if they can understand what you are writing about. Here are 10 simple rules for good writing:
1.    Write to express, not to impress
Good writing isn’t based on how long an article is, or how many adjectives were used. Rather, it’s more about the readers you’ve touched. You don’t touch hearts of people just because you wrote a 2,000-word post. You touch their hearts because they could understand what you’ve written and could see things from your point of view.

2.    Nothing beats simple sentences
Compound and complex-compound sentences might make you sound smart, but it’s only going to make it much more difficult for your reader to understand.

People won’t like you if you’re making it difficult for them to see the point. If they’re reading your blog it means they’re interested. Don’t piss them off by writing complicated sentences that they can’t make out.

3.    Write in the active voice
Don’t write “The faculty meeting was directed by Dr. Smith”. Instead, write “Dr. Smith directed the faculty meeting”.

4.    Know your target audience
Can you imagine traveling without a destination? Well, of course not. That would be preposterous. How will you know which train to take? Which bus or road to take if you don’t even know where you’re headed?

It’s the same thing with blogging. Know who you’re writing for. Otherwise, how will you know which topics to write about?

5.    Read it aloud
Your history and English professors might have commended you for your book reports and term papers, but do you want to know the harsh truth? They’re all boring. Remember the know-it-all kid in your class that nobody talked to because they knew too much? Well, that’s how book reports and term papers sound like.

And that’s how your writing is going to sound like if you don’t read it out aloud. Take my advice. If you want to write good stuff, then write like you’re talking to a friend. Be conversational. Make your reader feel like he’s talking to an old mate, not just some blogging robot that has no other intention than to earn subscribers.
6.    Size matters in writing

That doesn’t mean you have to browse the internet for long, complicated and fancy words.

In the jungle, the bigger animal is the victor. It’s not the same with blogging. The shorter your sentences, the better it is for your readers. People who write long and complicated paragraphs are the ones who have the lowest web traffic.

Instead of writing “my headache was so intense that I swear it almost broke into tiny little pieces”, just write “my headache was intense”.

7.    Avoid jargon
Not everyone in your audience can understand all the scientific and complicated words that you’re using. And what do people do when they can’t understand something? They leave it behind.

8.    Write in a positive tone
Nobody wants to read about how your girlfriend cheated on you with your best friend. It’s much better to keep a positive light when writing since people are usually reading blogs to turn their bad days to good ones.

9.    Separate writing from editing
Remember how I said that people can only focus on once thing at once?

Take the time to complete your article first before editing it. When you write and edit all at once, you tend to miss tons of typos and other grammatical errors. Rather than being too grammar conscious, you should instead focus your attention on getting all the facts together. Say everything that you intend to say.

10.     Write all the time
The only way for you to remember all of this is by applying it. With that, make it a habit of writing all the time. You know what they say about practice makes perfect.

At first, following all these advice is going to be a drag. You’ll feel like you’re never going to finish your article if you can’t write it your way, and you’re going to feel that way for all eternity if you don’t practice writing right now.
So, what’s the answer? Keep on practicing. The time will come when everything is going to come naturally to you.
