Develop Your Writing: Writing Skills and Technique

Ernest Hemingway once told, ‘There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed.’ But do you really need to bleed while writing or there is some other approach that will help you do your job and enjoy the process? Indeed, there is. Taking writing as an enjoyable process is not the easiest thing to do, but you should at least try.

We have collected several writing skills, techniques and methods to make the process of writing more satisfying and pleasant. All of them are effective for belles-lettres, professional academic writing, blogging, reports and even for writing your essay for high school.

  1. Start with the basics of writing

A good writing starts with spelling, grammar, and punctuation. These mistakes can turn your novel from a good piece of writing into mediocre paper that is not interesting to no one. Today, you do not need to remember all rules by heart to write mistakes. There are several apps that help ensure high quality of your texts and reduce the number of possible mistakes.

There is also a list of basic keep-in-mind tips that will help you write efficiently:

  • short sentences
  • using of words with direct meanings
  • proper usage of commas
  • the division into paragraphs
  1. Mind your style

Always check your writing for style cohesion. This is perhaps the most boring and complicated part of writing, especially if you are a novelist. You need to make sure that the first chapter of your novel and the last one is written is absolutely identical style, as well as all the chapters between.

To make sure that you follow this rule, create some guidelines for your own writing: what terms to use, what tone of voice to choose, and how to present different information.

  1. Check the coherence

This is another point that can destroy your writing if you ignore it. Everything in your writing should be connected logically. The events should complete each other not to ruin the general story. Again, create guidelines for the coherence of your writing. Create family trees for your characters, take pictures of houses and street locations, and even write down the back story. This is a thorough and lasting work, but it will benefit reaching proper results.

  1. Develop your own patterns

Writing is not only about creativity. Sometimes, to write something good, you need to follow a pattern. Patterns are widely used among writers. They help become more productive and master writing skill daily. Besides, patterns affect your possibility to develop different ideas with the same source data.

  1. Practice

In writing, regular practice is the only way to achieve success. If you write just a couple of times per month, you lose your writing skills. You need more time to concentrate, to find effective words and you pay efforts to stick to the idea.

However, it is hard to find free time for writing. In this case, you should use another trick that helps develop writing skills but requires less time. This is rewriting and imitation of other writer’s style. When you write one and the same words, the mechanical memory is activated and the next time you need some bright idea, these words will appear in your head.

  1. Use thesaurus

The predominant number of writers never uses dictionaries and thesaurus to find words with the correct meanings. In fact, thesaurus should become your friend. Each time you want to express a thought more clearly, you should check the word for it. It is known, that our active vocabulary is bigger than our passive vocabulary. There are also many words that we encounter so rarely that they are even not introduced neither in our active not in the passive vocabulary. Do not be afraid to use some unusual words and add some phrases that you have never used before. Your readers will appreciate that.

  1. Criticize your drafts

Never publish or post your writing until you edit and proofread it. A high quality should be your main aim. If you have many mistakes, incoherent narration, and fading idea, no one will read you. Be a critic to your writing – always double check it and do not be afraid to rewrite the whole passages and even chapters if you are not satisfied with the quality.

Writing is not a talent, it is a skill that we may and should master. These 7 techniques will help enhance your approach to creating texts and developing ideas for your blog, book or article. Implement them in your work, and enjoy the benefits!
